Muslim Legal Fund of America Calls Six Imams Settlement a Victory

SIX IMAMS CASE
Press Conference: Community shows support.
Attorneys for six imams reached a tentative agreement with Minneapolis-based Metropolitan Airports Commission to settle a federal lawsuit filed by the imams after airport authorities removed them from a US Airways flight and then handcuffed and interrogated the Muslim religious leaders for several hours about their political views.

Although the settlement does not include an apology, the imams are satisfied with the settlement and consider it an acknowledgement that the airport authorities made a mistake. An unspecified monetary compensation is mentioned, but both parties agreed to not disclose the details of the proposed settlement. Attorneys for the imams said details of the settlement still need to be finalized and approved by the judge.

Khalil Meek of the Muslim Legal Fund of America, a charitable legal fund that funded the case, hailed the agreement as a major victory for civil rights, justice and security in America.

"Muslims should not have to fear being dragged off of planes just because some passengers don't like their accent or the way they look," said Meek, President of MLFA. "This settlement sends a clear message to airport authorities to focus on real security threats instead of paranoia and profiling."

The lawsuit alleges that the defendants violated the imams' constitutionally protected rights against unreasonable searches and seizures as well as their right to an attorney and equal protection under the law. Other allegations include discrimination, violation of privacy, violation of the right to make and enforce contracts, and failure to train supervise and discipline Commission officers and US Airways employees and agents.
